We are excited to welcome Victoria Bossong (@victoriabossong) to the FilAm Sports team. Bossong, a sophomore at Harvard University, graduated from Cheverus High School and calls Cumberland, Maine as home.
Victoria’s mother, Dr. Catalina Yaco Atienza DMD, was born and raised in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro. After graduating from Centro Escolar University College of Dentistry, she proceeded to teach for an additional five years.
Victoria understands the importance of representing the Philippines, “so many of my blessings can be attributed to the sacrifices of my elders and ancestors. From serving in World War II to later leaving behind their beloved home in hopes of greater opportunities, my Filipino family paved the way to my success,” states Bossong. “I have taken advantage of the fortunate situation my ancestors have bestowed upon me, and I owe all my achievements to my family’s native land. The honor would be mine to represent our magnificent nation.”
As a student-athlete in one of the most respected educational institutions, Bossong leads and shows that it is possible to excel both in academics and athletics. “Being a role model to younger athletes is of utmost importance to me. It is deeply essential for aspiring athletes to be positively influenced by exemplars so that they may witness and be drawn to the determination, optimism, and integrity that they too should strive for,” adds Bosong. “Knowing that I can bring hope to and inspire the Filipino youth to strive for greatness serves as a far greater achievement than anything I could accomplish on the physical track.”
Victoria is constantly surrounded by her Filipino heritage. She credits get-togethers and lists champorado, suman, puto, tapsilog, pancit, and lumpia as her favorite dishes. “I am very fortunate to be surrounded by many Titos and Titas who share the love of cooking exquisite Filipino dishes as well,” states Bossong. “Additionally, my mother has always pushed the core Filipino values of family, hospitality, religious adherence, and respect for elders.”
Having had the opportunity to spend time in the Philippines, Victoria proudly says that Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro, her mothers hometown, as her favorite place to visit. “The luscious vegetation and pristine ocean waters were picturesque, and I felt welcomed by the warm smiles of passersby. My family had organized a dental and medical mission trip to this village, and I was able to witness the genuine gratitude of the natives as well as listen to many of their life stories. I look forward to returning to Puerto Galera very soon! “
