We are excited to announce the addition of Filipino-American hammer thrower, Sidney Yap (@sid.yap), to the Fil-Am Sports Team. Sid was born and raised in Virginia and completed his collegiate career at George Mason University throwing hammer, discus, and weight throw.
Both of Sid’s parents were born and raised in the Philippines. His father, Federick, was born in Parañaque City and graduated from San Beda College. His mother, Florevic, was born in Tacloban City, Leyte where both of Sid’s grandparents still currently reside.
Sid is thankful to have grown up in a strong Filipino household where the love for Filipino traditions and cuisines are eminent through large family gatherings. “I am very much proud of my upbringing and grateful to have such a big family that encourages us to embrace our Filipino roots. I want to do my best to keep traditions going so that when I have kids of my own, they too can be proud of their culture and where their ancestors came from.”
As a 60-meter hammer throw, Sid looks forward to the opportunity to represent the Philippines for the coming years. “Throwing hammer is a passion of mine and to wear the colors proudly is the dream. I know what I’m physically capable of and look to fight for medals at major competitions such as SEA Games and Asian Athletic Championships.”
He has much love for giving back to the community and hopes to inspire young Filipinos who are just getting into throwing to chase their dreams.
